When people ask me what Kuando el Rey Nimrod is about, they’re often surprised by the answer.

Most people know it as a traditional Ladino party song. But it has a hidden meaning

The song tells the story of Abraham, an ancestor shared by Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Depending on who’s telling it, some details change. Each tradition adds its own voice. Yet at its heart, they’re all telling the story of the same person.

When I recorded this video in the Arab souk of Jerusalem, that felt especially meaningful.

My husband and I simply showed up with a camera. Before long, people gathered around us. Some started dancing, others sang along, asked questions, and shared stories. What began as a performance quickly became a conversation.

To me, that’s the real power of folk music

A song can cross borders more easily than people sometimes can. It invites curiosity instead of debate. It reminds us that the stories we inherit don’t belong to just one culture. They travel, they evolve, and they connect us across generations.

Perhaps our own family stories are the same.

We may remember the same grandparents differently. We may inherit different traditions, recipes, languages, or beliefs. None of that makes our stories less true. It makes them richer.

As a touring songwriter, I have the privilege of meeting people from all over the world. After almost every concert, someone comes up to tell me where their family comes from, a tradition they grew up with, or a story passed down through generations. Time and again, I discover we have more in common than we ever imagined.

My rendition of Kuando el Rey Nimrod reflects that.
