im ninalu

A prayer for generosity

Im Ninalu is a Hebrew prayer for generosity. Yemenite Jews sing it on Yom Kippur, reminding us that even when the gates of the generous are closed, the gates of heaven will always stay open.

There is something beautiful about that simple idea. We don’t always know which doors will open for us. Sometimes people say no, sometimes things don’t work out the way we hoped. But the prayer reminds us not to lose hope, there is always another door.

Im Ninalu is one of those songs that has traveled far beyond its original context. I grew up hearing Ofra Haza’s famous version, but for me, underneath the beautiful melody is this simple prayer: to keep believing that a door will open.

I wanted to make Im Ninalu very simply: with my voice and my trombone, leaving space for the words to breathe. It’s part of my upcoming album, The Courage to Pray, a collection of minimalist Jewish prayers for uncertain times.

I’m making this album independently, and I’d love for you to be part of making it happen. If these prayers mean something to you, you can make a contribution or pre-order a copy, and help me make this album a reality.
