havdala

A prayer for peace

We sing this song on Saturday night to say goodbye to Shabbat and welcome the new week. Havdala is a ceremony marking the transition from the quiet of Shabbat back into everyday life.

We light a braided candle, smell sweet spices, drink wine, and say a blessing that separates the holy from the ordinary. There is something beautiful about having a ritual for this moment, taking a little time to say goodbye to Shabbat before stepping back into the week.

Debbie Friedman’s melody has always felt especially warm and intimate to me. It turns this simple moment of transition into something that feels almost like a prayer for the week ahead.

I’m going to record the full song for my new upcoming album, The Courage to Pray, a collection of minimalist Jewish prayers for uncertain times. It’s going to be very intimate: my voice in several layers and some harp music to accompany it. Leaving space for the words to breathe.

I’m making this album independently, and I’d love for you to be part of making it happen. If these prayers mean something to you, you can make a contribution or pre-order a copy, and help me make this album a reality. Donations start from $1, and every little bit counts.

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the universe, who creates the fruit of the vine.

Over the spices

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the universe, who creates varieties of fragrant spices.

Over the flame

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the universe, who creates the lights of fire.

Havdalah

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the universe, who separates between the holy and the ordinary, between light and darkness, between Israel and the nations, between the seventh day and the six days of creation. Blessed are You, Adonai, who separates between the holy and the ordinary.
