Did you know that Violeta Parra wrote Gracias A La Vida before she took her own life?
It’s one of the most bittersweet songs ever composed. Every verse thanks life for its gifts: sight, sound, love, laughter, even sorrow.
Years later, Mercedes Sosa made the song her own. Having endured exile, censorship, and profound personal hardship, she sang it with a tenderness that gave the words an entirely new dimension.
Knowing both women’s stories, it’s impossible not to hear the song differently. Whether or not Parra intended it as a farewell, Gracias a la Vida has come to embody a profound paradox: a love letter to life from someone who knew deep suffering, carried into the world by another woman who had also endured more than most.
That’s what makes it so powerful. This is why I chose to record it as the final track of my album Ke Haber.
When you hear it, you’re not just listening to a beautiful melody. You’re witnessing two remarkable artists who found gratitude without denying pain. They remind us that gratitude isn’t the absence of suffering, it can exist alongside it. And perhaps that’s why Gracias a la Vida continues to move people across generations and cultures.
