One of my favorite things about traditional Ladino songs is that they’re not always as sweet as they sound.

Si Verias a la Rana (“If You See a Frog”) starts like the perfect children’s song. A group of children is dancing in a circle, inviting all the animals to come and play. First the frog, then the mouse, then one by one they all join in.

So far, so innocent.

Except… it’s a trap.

The children have actually lured the animals into a frying pan. By the end of the song, they’ve cooked them and eaten them all!

I still laugh every time I sing it.

Today we’re used to children’s stories being softened and sanitized, but older folk songs often weren’t afraid to be a little mischievous, or even a little cruel. They reflected a world where humor, danger, and everyday life all lived side by side.

I grew up with my grandmother singing Ladino songs to me, and I love that they aren’t perfect little fairy tales. They’re funny, dramatic, emotional, and sometimes completely absurd. That’s what makes them feel so human.

When I perform Si Verias a la Rana, I usually see the audience smiling at the cheerful melody… until they realize what’s actually happening. Watching that moment of surprise is one of my favorite parts of the song.

Maybe that’s why these songs have survived for centuries. They’re memorable. They make us laugh. They shock us a little. And they remind us that childhood has always been full of imagination, not just sweetness.
