Luck, Love, and the Cards We Hold

Some songs find each other across time.

When I wrote Mi Korazon, I wasn’t thinking about Sting’s Shape of My Heart. Years later, I realized they were asking the same question from completely different directions.

In Shape of My Heart, the card player isn’t gambling for money. He’s searching for meaning. He learns that the cards are symbols: spades, clubs, diamonds, hearts. They become a way of understanding life itself.

Without realizing it, I was using the same language. In Mi Korazon, the cards aren’t about winning either. They’re about choice.

My heart is not the same
My hand is full of clubs
I lay down my sword
I’ve grown tired
of chasing your diamond
Fortune asks for more
than the hand you’re dealt

Those words came from my grandmother. When she died, I was only 12 years old. She was the first person I ever lost, and I didn’t let myself cry.

Years later, when I finally wrote my first song about her, I found myself returning to one lesson she had repeated throughout my childhood:

Luck isn’t something that happens to us. It’s something we create.

That’s where Mi Korazon and Shape of My Heart part ways. Sting wonders whether life can be understood by reading the cards. I believe the cards are only the beginning. The real magic lies in what we choose to do with them.

Perhaps fortune isn’t written in our hand after all. Perhaps we write it ourselves.
