What did Jerusalem mean to a Sephardic girl living in medieval Spain?
She had never seen it.
She probably never would.
And yet, she dreamed about it.

Irme Kero (“I Want to Go”) tells the story of a young girl asking her mother if they can walk to Jerusalem. She is only fourteen years old, full of hope and curiosity, imagining the Holy Land she has heard about in stories.

Her mother knows better… The journey would have taken months, crossing kingdoms, mountains, deserts, and seas. It was dangerous, expensive, and for most families, impossible.

But instead of saying, “No,” the two begin to dream together!

They imagine what the water will taste like. They picture the fruit growing in the Land of Milk and Honey. They wonder what it will feel like to finally reach the city they have prayed towards all their lives.

I love this song because it isn’t really about arriving. It’s about longing. That’s why I recorded it for my album Andalusian Brew.

Irme Kero is one of the songs I listen to before going on tour. It reminds me that every journey begins with curiosity and hope. Just like that young girl dreaming of Jerusalem, I set off looking forward to meeting new people, sharing music, and discovering the connections between our stories.
