Adio Kerida

A mellodrama Ladino ballad
from the 15th century!

For years, I couldn’t connect with Adio Kerida. I always thought it was unbearably melodramatic. Then one day it dawned on me: that’s exactly the point. Beneath the heartbreak is a wink, a touch of irony, and the kind of theatrical flair that has helped this song endure for generations. Once I found that smile, I finally found my own voice in it.

The more I sang it, the more I realized the lyrics don’t beg someone to stay or seek revenge. They simply say goodbye: Adio, kerida, farewell my beloved. What first sounded like exaggerated sorrow became, for me, a song about dignity, resilience, and knowing when it’s time to let go.

Recording Adio Kerida on my album Andalusian Brew became an invitation to rediscover a classic through a different lens. I hope that when you hear my version, you’ll find both the tears and the smile hidden in this timeless Ladino song. If it speaks to you, I’d love for you to stream the song and explore the rest of the album.
