Avinu Malkenu
A Hebrew prayer for the new year
Avinu Malkenu is one of the most powerful Jewish prayers I know. Its name means “Our Father, Our King,” and the prayer is a series of simple, vulnerable requests: forgive us, protect us, give us strength, and bring us peace. I’ve heard it since I was a child, but singing it now, the words feel especially human. There’s something moving about admitting that we don’t have all the answers, and simply asking for help.
I wanted to make Avinu Malkenu very simply: with my voice and my trombone, leaving space for the words to breathe. It’s part of my upcoming album, The Courage to Pray, a collection of minimalist Jewish prayers for uncertain times.
I’m making this album independently, and I’d love for you to be part of making it happen. If these prayers mean something to you, you can make a contribution or pre-order a copy, and help me make this album a reality.
