There is something funny about the fact that my parents sent me to religious school hoping I would become a good Jewish girl.
Instead, I became a professional question asker.

The teachers were not thrilled.
“Why does God need our prayers if God already knows everything?”
“If Moses talked to a burning bush, why are we suspicious when artists talk to muses?”
“If God is plural, surely there’s a woman in the mix?”
“If two Jews have three opinions, does God have four?”

Apparently these were not the kinds of questions they were hoping for before morning prayers.

But something stayed with me.
The melodies.
The ancient prayers drifting through hallways.
Voices singing words that had traveled centuries to arrive in my small
classroom.
Songs carried across continents, exiles, wars, oceans, and generations.

I left many things behind from those years.
But the music followed me home.

People sometimes think prayer belongs to certainty.
But some of the most honest prayers I have ever spoken began with:
“I don’t know if anyone is listening.”

I have called God’s name into the silence.
I have asked questions and heard no answers.
I have sung into empty rooms and wondered whether prayer is simply another word for hope.

And still, I pray.
Not because I am sure.
Not because I am religious.
Because I am longing.
Because there is something deeply human about speaking our hopes out loud.

Some people call it prayer.
Some people call it intention.
Some people call it meditation.
Some people call it manifesting.

The Buddhists sit quietly with the mystery.
The Jews discuss it loudly over soup.

Different techniques.
Same mystery.

Maybe faith isn’t certainty.
Maybe faith is the space between love and stress.
Maybe prayer begins the moment we stop trying to control everything.
Maybe prayer is allowing ourselves to enter the ritual.

Right now, I think we need that more than ever.
The world feels louder.
Faster.
Angrier.
Every time I open the news, humanity seems to have discovered exciting new ways to disappoint itself.

And yet, I’m not the only dreamer.
There are still people making art.
Still people helping strangers.
Still people believing in kindness with unreasonable determination.

Prayer is not passive.
It is a rehearsal for the world we want to live in.

When we pray for peace, we become slightly more peaceful.
When we pray for healing, we become slightly more healing.
When we pray for courage, courage has somewhere to land.

This album is my offering to that conversation.
Jewish prayers stripped back to their bones.
Just my voice.
My piano.
My trombone.
And a lot of silence between the notes.
No band.
No production tricks.
No angelic choir descending from heaven on perfectly tuned cloud formations.

Just breath.
And time.
Because that is what prayer is, after all.
Breath with direction.

These songs are ancient Jewish prayers reimagined as minimal, living mantras for modern life.
Whether you are religious, secular, Jewish, Buddhist, spiritual, skeptical, or simply tired and trying your best:

YOU ARE INVITED.

what your support makes possible

I am choosing to release The Courage To Pray independently.
Not because I had to.
Because I wanted these recordings to remain as intimate and personal as the prayers that inspired them.

Over the years, I’ve spoken with wonderful people in the music industry about possible collaborations and partnerships. Many imagined a bigger record. More instruments. More production. More layers.

But these songs kept asking for less. Just a voice. A piano. A trombone. Breath. Silence. Space to listen. They reminded me of my grandparents’ voices praying. Not performing. Not entertaining. Simply being present.

I often feel that when I look into the past, I can see the future more clearly. So I chose to follow that voice.

Your support makes possible:
• Recording
• Mixing and mastering
• CD production
• Vinyl pressing
• Artwork and design
• Video production
• Distribution and promotion

Every contribution, large or small, helps transform these songs from an idea into something we can hold in our hands, sing in our homes, and carry with us into uncertain times. Thank you for helping create a place for these prayers to live.

You don’t need certainty.
You don’t need permission.
You don’t even need faith.
Only longing.
And perhaps a little courage.
The courage to pray.

If this project speaks to you, I would love your support in bringing it into the world.
And after you donate, come find me on social media and tell me:
What do you pray for?
Peace?
Courage?
Love?
Sleep?
A functioning democracy?
The strength to stay in your family group chat even though your uncle keeps forwarding conspiracy theories?
I want to know.
Because prayer was never meant to happen alone.

Let’s pray together.
Let’s dream together.
And maybe, just maybe, the world becomes a little kinder because we did.

Love,
Nani
